Baxenden is a small community just outside Accrington in
Lancashire in the UK. It lies about 25 miles north east of Manchester and is
just in the foothills of the Pennine hills that run down the length of the U.K
.
This is Manchester Road, the main road through the village.
The red brick houses are just over a 100 years old but the
white cottages were built in the late 18th century.
The road looks quiet now, Sunday morning, but it becomes very busy during
the working day. The trees on the left of the picture are just inside the church
graveyard.
A view of our local church - St John's.
This is a very old church and attracts a large congregation every Sunday.
A couple of old cottages that we pass every time we take Charlie and Oscar for walks.
They lie at the bottom of a long Public Footpath that goes down the valley towards
a stream at the bottom
This is a view of one of our 'hostelries' in the village - The Bay Horse.
They used to serve lovely bar snacks and meals until 7 pm and then it's time for the
serious drinkers!! Unfortunately meals are no longer available but there are still plenty of serious drinkers !
Every Saturday night is "Entertainment Night" when there is usually a
singer or group providing the music.
Luckily the pub is only three minutes walk from our home and it is easy
to get home even after a few drinks!
A view of what used to be the local railway line but the line was disbanded some
25 years ago and has now become a local walk which eventually goes down to the
stream which is great for children and their pets.
This is Fred having a rest - he used to love it 'along the line'.

A recent photo of the goslings nearby. They are starting to grow up now - they are no longer fluffy yellow bundles.
A photo of Christmas snow. We had a flurry of snow around Christmas time last year and it made the lanes look lovely.
A photo of the old Market Hall in nearby Accrington .

A photo of the market square in Accrington.
This dancing group of 'cloggers' win many events in the district.
This procession walked up Manchester Rd and turned into the church. The photo looks as if it was taken round about 1900 (guess!)
These children were getting ready for their Whit Walks from the Mission Sunday School in the village. Photo taken in 1941. The mission was pulled down years ago. We can name all but 9 of the people on the photo.
Photos of the railway viaduct in Accrington
The viaduct cuts right across the road network almost in the centre of the town
These next few photos show the Church and School 'Walking Day' in July of each year. The school is a Church
of England School and was built around 1837.
Another photo of the Church/school 'walk of witness'
Showing the police escort for the school 'walkers'.
A 'Dragon' built by a children and a local artist.
The dragon is to be found on the disused railway line which is now a nature walk.
A steam train in Rawtenstall Railway Station. Not really Baxenden but
Rawtenstall is a town only 5 miles away !
Another pic of the steam train. A very rare sight these days
