'Our Fred'
27th August 1987 - 26th May 2000

We had to have our Fred put to sleep today. He has been ill for over 6 months with a heart problem that caused him to have fluid on the lungs - similar to emphasyma in adults. He had to keep clearing his lungs with a retching sound every 10 minutes or so.
He was 13 years old and had reached the end of the line. The vet came to our house and said it was time to let him go - it was the hardest decision we have ever had to make. Fred was the loveliest dog we have ever had - so gentle with everyone - so intelligent. It is really a sad time. Lynne cuddled him as he went to sleep for the last time. We've posted some pictures so that you can see what a love he was.

Fred used to like opening his own Christmas presents

Jade is nearly 20 years old now so you can see how long ago it was.

front garden July 1999

Fred was cremated at our local pet cemetery and we brought home his ashes .
He always used to sit like a statue on the front lawn and so we planted a standard rose called "Sweet Dream" in the place where he used to sit. His ashes are buried beneath the rose.
We feel much more at ease now because it seems that Fred has come back home.

The bottom picture is Fred's rose in July 2001 - for some reason the colour seems different than last year - must be a trick of the light!

If It Should Be
If it should be that I grow weak Or pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done For this last battle can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand; Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest, Your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years- What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so; The time has come, so let me go.
Take me to where my needs they'll tend And please stay with me 'til the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see The kindness that you did for me.
And though my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve - it must be you Who has this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years - Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

Bye Fred - you were the greatest and we'll miss you.

We got another dog but he can never replace Fred. The new dog is a yellow
Labrador called "Oscar".    Oscar looked so lonely that we decided to get him a companion
and we bought a black labrador puppy dog called "Charlie.
Oscar and Charlie now get on very well together and they have their own web page.
